#AskPharma - Protect Kids AGAINST Pneumonia!

10:20:00 PM

We all know that Pneumonia or an acute respiratory infection affecting our lungs can be prevented! As a matter of fact, the disease is curable... During the #AskPharma Campaign I attended over the weekend, couldn't believe it kills nearly 1.1 MILLION children under 5 years old, every year ~ Philippines is one of the 15 countries that together account for 75% of childhood pneumonia cases worldwide.

#AskPharma is an MSF's (Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders) global advocacy to help developing countries and humanitarians acquire affordable life-saving pneumonia vaccines.

Dr. Kitts Sarte was with us during the Knowledge Sharing ^

Baikong Mamid Sia, Senior Communication Officer presented more information about #AskPharma Campaign + the current status ^

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine is an endorsed protection for children younger than 5 years old. Only Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline (both have reaped more than $23 billion in sales) produces this life-saving vaccines and according to DOH data, below are the 2016 prices in USD offered for PCV:

Vial: $15.37/dose (about P2150 for 3 doses)
Pre-filled Syringe: $14.99/dose (about P2100 for 3 doses)

Vial: $14.12/dose (about P1970 for 3 doses)
Pre-filled Syringe: $14.50/dose (about P2000 for 3 doses)

The cost has dramatically increased in recent years to get the kids vaccinated. Several countries has struggled to absorb the rising costs and obviously many families can't afford to get a dose or two!

Although PCV is given FREE in government health centers except NCR, IV-A & B. Philippines is not GAVI (Vaccine Alliance) eligible country for we are under the Middle-Income Country category.

- The cost to vaccinate a child is TOO expensive!
Affordable vaccine pricing would allow us to vaccinate more kids.
MSF is campaigning for Pfizer and GSK to lower price of the pneumonia vaccine to $5/child for 3 doses, required for full vaccination.

- A collective voice of concerned supporters and patients can make a difference.
Did you know that MSF was able to bring down the price of HIV/AIDS treatment from P10,000 to $100/year? I am sure they can do this successfully with our signatures.

- $5 is a reasonable price!
Through research and studies done, it has been determined the most affordable and viable price point. Vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India has publicly stated that it will sell the vaccine for $6/child (for all three doses) when it brings its version of the vaccine to market in several year's time.

- Pfizer and GSK should not take advantage of poor people.
Why would it cost so much, right?

- Price transparency is every country's right.
Affordable vaccine is all we ask!

We all care! SIGN THE PETITION
